Warranty Enhancement Program ZG8
2012 - 2013 Model Year iQ Extension of Warranty Coverage for Rough Idle

In our continuing efforts to ensure the best in customer satisfaction, Toyota is announcing a Warranty Enhancement Program to extend the warranty coverage for certain 2012 – 2013 model year Scion iQ vehicles that exhibit a rough idle and abnormal noise condition caused by internal carbon deposit in the combustion chambers.

Background:
In these vehicles, Toyota has received some reports where vehicles may exhibit a combination of abnormal engine noise and rough idle. Although the engine is covered by “Toyota’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty” for 5 years or 60,000 miles (whichever occurs first), we at Toyota care about the customers’ ownership experience. Toyota is now extending the warranty coverage for repairs related to engine noise and rough idle condition caused by internal carbon deposit in the combustion chambers.

Warranty Enhancement Program Details:
This Warranty Enhancement Program provides enhanced coverage to the vehicle’s “New Vehicle Limited Warranty” as it applies to the engine. The specific condition covered by this program are repairs related to internal carbon deposits in the combustion chambers. If the condition is verified, for the enhanced term, the vehicle will be repaired with a new cylinder head cover, and the combustion chambers will be cleaned.

• The coverage offers warranty enhancement for 9 years from the date of first use with no mileage limitation.

Covered Vehicles:
There are approximately 11,500 vehicles covered by this Warranty Enhancement Program. Also note that approximately 250 vehicles covered by this Warranty Enhancement Program were distributed to Puerto Rico.

Owner Letter Mailing Date:
Toyota will notify owners in late March 2017

I received this letter from Toyota. Has anyone called their dealer to inquire about the work? Would love to hear. I have a 2012 Scion IQ with 124K miles.

Goes back to 2013 service bulletin S-SB0032-13 where Toyota was replacing pistons rings wrist pins and oil jets for free in 2012 and 2013 IQs. If the dealership didn't connect the dots with your symptoms, you now have this band-aid approach of cleaning the combustion chamber periodically. My IQ is using 1 qt every 500 - 600 miles. It stalls unexpectedly when it chokes on a chunk of carbon buildup. The engine light will come on and codes in the computer will show cylinder #X misfire. I have to shut the engine off and restart to get it to run again. Not a good thing in highway rush hour traffic in Dallas. It's never the same cylinder twice in a row. Toyota has offered me a $1,900 credit on a $4,600 job to do what they did for free back in 2013. I'm the original owner and not satisfied with their offer and plan on further negotiating and a PR campaign to force a better deal. My cell number is ###-###-#### if you would like to discuss.

Randy, thanks for your reply and help with this but please don't post your personal phone number publicly on the Internet. Just set an extra Email account for this if you would like.

So my 2012 IQ has 205,000 miles on it, has all your same symptoms and eats about a quart of oil every 1000 miles. Been doing it for a while now. Have to constantly change fouled plugs. I'm at the point now where I want to replace the engine. I got this warranty extension paperwork a few weeks ago and decided to take it to my local dealer to see if perhaps the oil consumption and the carbon build up issues were related. I figured they most likely were. Carbon build up must be coming from burning all the oil. My question was how replacing the valve cover was actually going to address any issue. It sounded like a band aid to me. Nobody at my dealer could explain it, or explain why the build up was occurring at all. They just kept reading back the words from the service bulletin. I've never come across this service bulletin from 2013 you mention here. Could I get more info from you? If there is any way at all to have Toyota address this issue on their dime rather than mine, I'd like to pursue it. Thanks!

Mine just hit the 80k miles mark and according to my second oil consumption test is burning a quart of oil every 1200 miles, I'm "covered" by the extended warranty and they told me that is normal for that car to burn up to a quart of oil every 600 miles but somehow I still have to change my oil at 10k miles! I told every single person at Toyota dealerships and Toyota care that by the time I run the car 4k miles the oil light comes on and I had to add the last time almost 4 quarts of oil.
The extended warranty is not worth the paper is written on and I will never ever buy a Toyota again and I will let everybody know about this.

Hi! I’m aware that this was posted in 2017, but did you have any results with your IQ? I have a 2013 that I’ve had this issue with right after purchasing it. However, when I type in my VIN at Toyota.com/recall nothing comes up.

Nothing came up in your search because you were searching Toyota's Recall database when you need this Warranty Enhancement Program. Please have your Toyota dealer run your vin through TIS and see if your iQ is covered, Read this...
