We have a 2015 RAV4 and are experiencing the shudder. Took it to our local certified mechanic who confirmed its the torque converter and was nice enough to print out the warranty bulletin posted by Toyota and encouraged us to contact them for a warranty repair. Well good ole Toyota won't budge on the repair stating our VIN number is not one of them covered under the warranty. How can this be when the vehicle is clearing experiencing the known problem?!?! To all of you 2015 RAV4 owners....fight it! We have filed a claim with the Federal Trade Commissioner who in turned advised us to file a claim with the Attorney General's office where the vehicle was purchased as well as the Better Business Bureau.

Glad to find this forum, we’re just now experiencing this issue on our 2013 (exact production date unknown). Our local mechanic told us what the issue is and advised us to talk to Toyota about it. Taking it in tomorrow to find out if they’ll honor the warranty or not. Fingers crossed that the 8 year aspect of the warranty coverage won’t cause issues.

You can find the production date on your drivers door sill plate (see post here). The easiest way to to have the Toyota dealer run your VIN through TIS (Toyota Information System) and it will tell if your vehicle is covered.

Where is your service place for the repair? That’s a place worth advertising!

I brought my 2013 Rav to a Toyota dealership after a helpful mechanic in town found this warranty program for me. Within 24 hours of bringing my car back home I experienced a new problem. I brought it back for a diagnosis which the dealership told me they would charge $118 for if it didn’t directly have to do with the work they did. They couldn’t figure it out the first time so I brought it back again when they told me my transmission is now failing and quoted $6700. When I asked if it’s possible the work they did is connected, they just said these things happen and it’s a coincidence.
I called the 800 Toyota number and when asking for help received no sympathy.
I bought a Toyota because I’ve been told over and over how dependable they are, and that just hasn’t been the case.

2014 Rav4 - My transmission failed after this repair was done a couple of years ago. Was told it would cost $7500.00 for a new transmission by my local dealership and it would be 2 months for the repair. Toyota is willing to help with a percentage of the repair but it is still going to cost me thousands! This is the 1st Toyota I have ever owned, guess I'll end up back with Honda.

2017 Toyota RAV4 XLE AWD. Purchased the extended warranty when purchasing the car. Sole owner. High mileage driver. Experienced the rumble strip shudder at 95K. Initially thought it was the roads that I was on because there is a lot of construction in my neck of the woods until it was happening on smooth patch of road. It was occurring in lower gears (40-50mph). Since I was close to 100,000 I took it in to the dealership. Test drove with a mechanic. Diagnosis- torque converter. They were going to charge around $2,500+. Thankfully it was covered under the extended warranty. They are fixing it now. Will pick up the car soon. I have to admit I am surprised/shocked that this problem has existed and continues to exist for so long.

Same here...2015 Rav 4 VIN not on "list"...not going quietly though... Case reports issued with a total of 3 federal/state commissions and bureaus. Not my first issue with Toyota and I will never one another one.
same issue 2015 rav4 has 171K miles..maybe I noticed it before 150K but it was rare and I thought it may just may be roar noise or tire noise now it louder and more frequent..Sucks they only cover up to 150K and other are unlimited

I had bought a 2013 Rav 4 in 2013 no issues until fall of 2022 I had received the warranty paper in the mail hung onto it forgot about it at the moment had my car fixed out of pocket Dec 27 -28th they tried to use the warranty but since it had passed the secondary 8 year mark was unable to. I called the corporate office hoping they could help with something I know I've reached the 8 yr mark (which came first) but my rav is under the 150000 miles an I told them even on your warranty it says if the car has no issues you don't need to do anything, so even though it's 3 months short of a 10 year mark it just now became an issue an if Toyota knows of these things it should be covered for the lifespan of the vehicle I'm sure there are an going to be other users having this happen that have to pay out of pocket for an issue that hasn't needed fixing yet as a long time Toyota customer I don't think its right.

Still to this day , the torque converter shudder I'm reading is for the 4th gen rav4 2013-2018. I'm read its for 2103-2015 but I'm hearing other years like 2017 are being affected too.

This is exactly the issue that I'm having! I have a 2013 RAV4, I'm the original owner, and this torque converter issue started just about 6 months ago. Toyota won't do anything because it's out of warranty, even though I'm well under 150,000 miles! So frustrating!! I have been looking online to see if there have been any class-action lawsuits filed, but can only see one for a similar issue (transmission) that was settled in 2011.
