2014-2015 Toyota Highlander Power Back Door Stops or is Inoperative

Some 2014 – 2015 model year Highlander vehicles may exhibit a condition in which the power back door starts to open or close normally, then intermittently stops and beeps twice. In most cases no current DTC is present, but DTC B2226 or B2227 (PBD Unit Pulse Sensor LH/RH Circuit) may be in history. Follow the Repair Procedure in this bulletin 0023-16 REV1.

Part numbers 68910-09021, 68910-09031 Unit Assy Set, Power Back Door, RH

I have this exact same problem with my 2014 Highlander XLE purchached brand new early 2015! First noticed it Dec 2015 when weather was below freezing point. It was intermittent and didn't address it at the time. During summer of 2016 I notice it having to occur more frequently so I decided to bring it to the dealership I purchased the vehicle from. I was told it will not be covered under warranty as my highlander was just over 36,000 miles. It was going to cost me $2000 to have them fix the problem! I think it should have been covered under warranty as this was a known defect/issue with the lift gate struts! Previous to this 2014 highlander I owned 2008 Limited and love it so much, since I traded with the 2014 I'm started regretting the change. Issue on the failed part and issue with warranty on the failed part.

My rear liftgate will not close without forcing it shut. Dealer said they did not know what was wrong. It worked for them. Continues to worsen. 76 ,000 miles. Bought new.

My 2014 has only 38,00 plus miles on it. Has had the liftgate issue of starting to open, stop and beeps several times before it is completely open, since right after the warranty was up. During the warranty period the dealership forced the liftgate up then it worked fine for a day or so. They never documented the issue. Now the warranty is up and I still have the problem. I called Toyota US headquarters, not willing to do anything except quote Toyota's policies.

Hello Toyota Headquarter,
I bought 2012 Highlander SE 71,000 miles. Now I have exactly same issue on back door- double beeps after pressing it. Any ideas to help would be helpful.

Thanks,
Soua

2022 Highlander Platinum. Having the same issues. It is very intermittent, and every time we take it to the dealer, it works fine and they do nothing. I finally plugged my Blue Driver Pro Scan Tool into the OBD port and read all the codes in the computer and got back a B2227 back door code. Online it says this refers to a Power Back Door Unit Pulse Sensor Right Circuit malfunction. This explains why the door opens most of the time, but occasionally opens and stops randomly. Fortunately, my car is still under warranty and I will be having Toyota look at it in my next service with them. I hope other people can post here if they have issues with the back door to document this so Toyota and dealers don't just brush off the issue when you explain.

I am having the exact same issue with my 2022 Highlander Platinum. It doesn't happen all the time but when it does, it is very annoying. Will open just slightly and then stop. And will do this about 3 times and then open all the way. Then it may or may not do it upon trying to close. I have brought to the dealership three times complaining about this - have multiple videos of it occurring. But they say they "can't replicate the issue so there is nothing they can do to diagnose." I brought it to a collision center and had them hook it up to the machine and got a B2226 back door code. Mine is the same error code but with the Left Circuit malfunction. I have an appointment tomorrow. I wonder what Toyota will say tomorrow to get out of having to fix this for me.

Were you able to get Toyota to take care of this for you?
