Though the visual link to the Toyota Auris is clear, the Scion iM has been dressed up for show-car duty with a wild body kit, a lowered suspension, 19-inch wheels, a center-exit exhaust, four-piston brake calipers, and "incrediblue" paint with matte silver and gunmetal accents. Despite the enhancements, there's no mistaking that this car is closely related to the production Toyota Auris. A V-shaped grille bookended by skinny headlights leads into a sloping hood, followed by a tall four-door hatchback body, with a narrow liftgate at the rear. The Toyota Auris measures 168.3 inches long and 69.3 inches wide, making it about a foot shorter than a Mazda 3 hatchback and eight inches longer than a Honda Fit.
While the Scion iM concept appears considerably more mature than Scion's existing xB and xD hatchbacks, it's still aimed at the youthful demographic the Toyota brand has always targeted.
"The iM Concept combines sleek styling with the versatility of a modern hatchback to catch the eye of Scion customers," Scion vice president Doug Murtha said in a statement. "They want a car that provides excitement and individuality, as well as the comfort, technology and reliability that Scion offers
It's unclear what engines will power the production version of the Scion iM concept, or whether the car will keep that name when it reaches showrooms sometime next year. Expect more details when the Scion iM concept debuts publicly on November 19 at the 2014 Los Angeles auto show.
